GOVERNOR Adams Oshiomohle of Edo State has disclosed that over 95, 000 persons from the state have so far applied for the on-going employment exercise under the Edo Youth Employment Scheme (EYES).
It would be recalled that the scheme was set up shortly after the governor was sworn as governor of the state, so as to provide employment for 10,000 residents of the state irrespective of their state of origin.
However, the governor who disclosed this at Government House, Benin City, said the number of the applicants so far was a clear evidence of the unemployment level in the state and assured however that government was equal to the task.
The governor spoke when the new state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Dalami Yar'Adua, and the AIG zone 5, Benin, Mr. Suleiman Fakai, visited him in his office to present the IG Cup which was won by the State Police Command.
According to the governor, "we started this recruitment exercise so that the police will have less work to do. You know that if these youths are idle they will go into crime.
You can imagine that we just started the exercise last week and over 95,000 people have applied already. That shows you the unemployment problem facing the state. We want to assist the police by creating jobs.
"Together we will ensure peace in the state. We know there can be no crime-free society but we will do our best to keep it at the barest minimum", he stated.
Governor Oshiomohle further assured the Police of assistance and commended police men for winning the cup, just as he gave a cash donation of N2.5 million to the sportsmen and their officers who made the victory possible.
