Angola: Demining Constitutes Government Priority in 2008

Luanda — The effort of the Angolan government for the removal and destruction of explosive devices, the assistance of landmines victims and population's awareness about the danger of these devices, among others, were part of the priorities of the government action in 2008.

Data from the National Inter-sectorial Commission for Demining and Humanitarian Assistance (Cnidah) states that the process involved the National Demining Institute (INAD), the National Reconstruction Office, Specialised Brigade of the Angolan Army (FAA), as well as international organisations and private operators.

In total, it was removed 4.083 anti-personnel landmines, 148 anti-tank mines and 162.795 non-detonated explosive devices, which resulted in the clearance of a surface of 328.036.136 million square metres and 1.577,8 kilometres of roads.

The above mentioned figures are added to 3.407 kilometres along the railways and nearby areas and at the sub-station of electricity supply, as well as telecommunications transmission neighbourhoods.

As regards assistance to landmines victims, during this period the medical service assisted urgent and continued situations cases, physical rehabilitation, psychological support, social and economic reintegration.

In 2008, it was also redoubled the campaigns for people's awareness about the risks of landmines and cares to be taken in case they find any explosive devices.

The activists explained to the communities the meaning of the alert signs, which inform the specific situation of an area, both those ones in danger and the cleared zones.
