Eritrea: Mr. Sultan Stresses Need for Conducting Agitation Programs Focusing On Upgrading the Skill of Youths

Asmara — The Chairman of the National Union of Eritrean Youth and Students (NUEYS), Mr. Sultan Seid, stated that agitation programs directed to youths should be educational that focuses on upgrading their skill and knowledge, as well as preserving societal values. He made the remarks at a workshop on developing the Union's media outlets.

Noting that the NUEYS is striving to nurture dynamic youth equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills and one who take active participation in the nation-building process, he expressed hope that the workshop would make due contribution in efforts to produce competitive and goal-oriented programs being undertaken in collaboration with partners. Mr. Sultan called on all institutions and the public at large to make due contribution in endeavors to nurture competent youths.

In a paper he presented at the workshop under the title "Mass Media and Coordinated Development Campaign," Mr. Girmai Berhe, director general of Radio Department in the Ministry of Information, indicated that youths are the ones who honor the trust of martyrs and guarantors of the nation's future. He further stressed the need for making coordinated investment in the methods being applied in the mass media so that the country's youths could live up to expectation as regards ethics and preserving the cherished national values.

Also in a study paper he presented under the title "The Role of Mass Media in Guiding Youths," Mr. Solomon Berhe from the Ministry of Information pointed out that the mission and objectives of media program directed to youths is aimed at fully acquainting them with the nation's history and the society's rich cultural heritages as well as noble values of the society, and thus promote nationalism and collective national consciousness, besides reinforcing pride in their identity.

Mr. Solomon further explained that the other motto of the media is to up date youths in the advancement of science and technology, as well as innovations, and thereby help them upgrade their research and innovative skills.

The participants of the workshop conducted discussion on the papers presented and put forth significant recommendations and opinions.
