Kampala — THE parliamentary committee on finance, planning and economic development is to lobby for more funds from the Government to invest in the banana industry at Nyaruzinga in Bushenyi district.

The chairperson, Gaudioso Tindamanyire, said during their tour of the industry, the committee realised that the initiative could bring fortune to the people of Bushenyi and the rest of the country.

Tindamanyire, who is also the MP for Bunyaruguru county, said: "Someone can earn over sh1m in less than a week from matooke if this factory goes into full production."

He said the committee was impressed by the value that was added to Matooke, where different products were made for instant consumption.

Tindamanyire was addressing the press at his country home in Bunyaruguru recently.

"I could not believe what I saw. Cakes, biscuits, bread and flour are made out of matooke. This is what our economy needs," he said.

Tindamanyire said if the products are well marketed, the country can earn billions of shillings.

He asked the management to plan how the industry can be sustained.

"Matooke is a seasonal crop," he added.

The factory, which is expected to start full-scale production this year, is a presidential initiative, run by a renowned Makerere University researcher, Dr Florence Muranda.
