Uganda: Bus Overturns Near Lyantonde

Kampala — THE driver of the bus registration number belonging tio to SB Coaches on Monday lost control, swerved off the road and overturned at Kyapa on the Mbarara-Lyantonde road, injuring some passengers seriously.

The police officer in charge of Kiruhura Police Station, Sgt. Festo Ojobile, said the driver of the fateful bus was drinking mineral water while eating roast meat (muchomo).

He said he was also overtaking from the left yet there was another vehicle coming from the opposite directio n and in the process of dodging it, the bus went off the road later overturned.

"The actual cause of this accident is reckless driving as the driver was trying to overtake from the wrong side of the road," Ojobile said.

The Traffic Police and Transport Licensing Board (TLB) had this festive season registered a significant decrease in accidents compared to the past ones due to joint operations against passenger vehicles that did not conform to standards among other requirements.

Steven Kasiima, Commissioner, Traffic and Road Safety said they had impounded several buses and Coasters belong to institutions that were taking advantage of the stuck passengers heading to villages for Christmas and New Year Celebrations to carry passengers without license.
