Zimbabwe: R & K Mull Comeback

Harare — SUNGURA music outfit, R&K African Sounds, who have been quiet for close to four years, are mulling a comeback.

The group last recorded Mhemberero, the album that marked their reunion following an acrimonious split. Now they are set to revive their music fortunes when they record their seventh album in March.

Rangarirai Sagombeto and Kelvin Chikore had hung up their guitars to concentrate on their private business careers.

Speaking to city.com recently, Kelvin dismissed claims that their silence was a result of yet another split.

"We are still around. Things are in order and plans are currently underway to give our fans what they expect from us. Apart from business, we had also been taking our time to learn different languages.

"On our next album, we are going to involve Venda artistes and also include some Ndebele songs. Our DVD is also in the pipeline and the videos would be shot in South Africa as well," he said.

Kelvin said he was working on a solo gospel project due for release in March.

"This is not going to be an R&K project, but mine alone backed by another group," said Kelvin.

It remains to be seen whether the outfit will rediscover their formula and reclaim their mantle.

They rose to prominence with Dama Rakanaka that spawned the hit single Tina in 1999 while Raramo was to follow a year later.

Sadly, 2001 saw the duo splitting to record separate albums, but the split did not pay off and they were back together in 2003.
