Today, friends and family members of renowned academician and administrator, Professor Anya O. Anya will celebrate with him as he clocks 72.
Anya was born January 3, 1937. He hails from Abiriba, Abia State.
He attended Church of Scotland Mission School, Abiriba between 1943 and 1949; Hope Waddel Training Institution, Calabar, Cross River State (1950-1956), University College, Ibadan (1958-1961) and St. John's College and Molteno Institute of Biology and Parasitology, University of Cambridge, England (1962-1965).
He started his career as a research officer at the Federal Fisheries Research Service, Lagos and was research officer, Department of Agricultural Research, Moor Plantation.
In 1965, he became a lecturer at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. He became a professor of zoology, University of Nigeria, Nsukka in 1973 and dean, Faculty of Biological Sciences 1975. He further served as dean, Faculty of Biological and Pharmaceutical Sciences, 1976. He was founding director, School of Post-graduate Studies in 1995 and subsequently retired in 2002.
He was on the board of several companies and agencies. He was a member, Governing Council, Lake Chad Research Institute, Maiduguri (1980-1983), director, NAAFCO (Scientific supplies) Limited; chairman, Board of Directors of the Niger Insurance Company Ltd (1984-1986) and Imo State Broadcasting Corporation (1987-1990).
He was a member of Governing Council, Akanu Ibiam Federal Polytechnic, Unwana and founding chairman, Board of Propagation and Publications of the Presbyterian Church of Nigeria (1981-1984). He also served on the Imo State Library Board between 1976 and 1979, Federal Government of Nigeria Committee on Academic and Administrative Structure of new Universities, National Universities Commission (NUC) in 1981.
He was also member, Governing Council, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, 1986-1990, Pugwash Movement for Science and Public Affairs Imo State Economic Consultative Committee (1984-1986), Advisory Board, Public Policy Research and Analysis Centre, Lagos, Vision 2010 and Nigerian National Merit Award among others.
Anya was the founding director, Diamond Bank Plc., and Citizens International Bank Plc. He was also the director, Spring Bank Plc.
He is a fellow of the Academy of Science, Institute of Biology, Linnaean Society of London; Cambridge Philosophical society; Nigerian Institute of Science and Technology; Nigerian Society of Parasitology; Akanu Ibiam Federal Polytechnic and New York Academy of Science.
He has several published works to his credit. They include, Science, Development and the Future: The Nigerian Case, Infrastructural Complaints to Basic Science and the Crises in African Development, Science and Technology: The Archilles Heel in Nigerian Development.
He holds Doctor of Science Degree from the Lagos State University. He is honoured with the national honour of Nigerian National Order of the Merit and Member of the Order of the Federal Republic.
Anya also holds the traditional title of Odu-Ena b'Udemba of Abiriba, Abia State and Ochemba of Assah-Ubirielem, Imo State.
