Nigeria: Abba Zoru, Veteran Broadcaster, Passes on at 75

Veteran journalist and ace broadcaster, Alhaji Ahmed Abba Zoru is dead. He died yesterday morning in Abuja at the age of 75.

Alhaji Zoru, who was the pioneer managing director of Radio-Television, Kaduna, passed on in the early hours of yesterday after a brief illness.

The former administrator and Nigeria's ambassador to then West Germany made his mark in the early years of the broadcasting world, becoming an icon in the industry.

The shocking news of his death saw many friends and well-wishers trooped into his Apo Legislative Quarters residence to sympathise with the family.

Amongst early visitors to the residence of the late icon, described as a humble elder statesman, was the director-general of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) Usman Magawata.

The Late Alhaji Zoru's remains have been laid to rest at the burial ground behind the Apo Legislative Quarters, according to muslim rites.

Born in 1933 in Maiduguri, Ambassador Zoru was among the pioneer staff of the defunct Broadcasting Company of Northern Nigeria, now FRCN Kaduna.

He served as Borno State commissioner of finance in 1972 and Nigeria's ambassador to Germany in 1984.

His contempories include the likes of Adamu Augie, Dahiru Modibbo, James Audu, Abba Gana, Sani Katsina, Patrick Ityohegh, Yusuf Ladan, Inua Jubril and a host of others of their ilk.

He is survived by a wife and ten children.
