Abakaliki — Ebonyi State Government has disbursed N300 million to six mission hospitals for enhancement of health service delivery in the state.
The disbursement was done in three tranches. The benefiting hospitals are Presbyterian Joint Hospital, Uburu N16.250 million; Rural Improvement Hospital, Ikwo, N20.25 million; Sudan United Rural Health Care Hospitals, N16 million; St. Patrick Mile N4 Hospital, N17.25 million; St. Vincent Hospital, Izzi, N14 million and Mater Hospital Afikpo,N16.25 million.
The state Commissioner for Health and Environment, Dr. Sunday Nwangele while disbursing the last chunk of the funds on Thursday in Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State capital, charged those in both private and public health sectors to carryout programmes that are focused on pursuing the objectives of free maternal health care delivery.
This, he said, would lessen the menace of maternal morbidity rate across the country.
He said the first and second phases were designed to address the basic challenges facing the private health practitioners while the third phase will pay particular attention to encouragement of infrastructure developments, renovations and face-lift of the institutions and announced that the Rural Health Services of Sudan Mission has commenced the services of free maternal health care to rural areas in Ebonyi State.
The commissioner noted that more of private and humanitarian health facilities were located in the hinterlands rendering effective health services to the populace, a development he said, the government would continue to encourage.
He added that the government of Ebonyi State has taken the lead in the public private partnership for global development, adding that the gesture of the government was designed to include other private practitioners located in remote areas.
The Commissioner for Health and Environment who represented the Governor of the state, Martins Elechi during the disbursement exercise, charged the recipients to be committed to the reduction of maternal mortality, which is one of the focuses of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
