Akwa Ibom — Akwa Ibom State Governor, Godwin Akpabio has concluded plans to commission this year, rural development projects worth about N9 billion.
The governor who disclosed this at Item in Bende Local Government Area of Abia State said already his government has commissioned more than 256 community projects.
Akpabio, attended the 2008 Item Day Celebration and harped on the need for good governance by public office holders, calling on people in the community and in Niger Delta to live in peace and love with one another.
Meanwhile, Akpabio has been honoured by Item community as the best governor on community and development in Nigeria for 2008.
The governor, who was introduced by the President-General of Item Development Association, Bishop Sunday N. Onuoha was acknowledged for his outstanding contributions to the development of rural communities in Akwa Ibom State .
In a citation, the community said the award was necessitated by the governor's approval of N2.7 billion for execution of rural electrification projects and his assurance to link every village in the state to national grid by 2011.
Akpabio thanked the community for the award and noted that the award was not misplaced based on his vision aimed at transforming the state and redressing the years of marginalisation of some sections in the state.
Highlight of the occasion was the conferment of awards on Alhaji Aliko Dangote, Mr. Timi Alaibe, NDDC Managing Director, Barr. Azubuike Udah, Assistant inspector of Police Zone 6 and others.
