The nationwide strike by Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), scheduled to begin today has been shelved, following a tripartite meeting held weekend, by ASUP executives, Minister of Education, Dr Sam Egwu and Executive Secretary, National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), Dr Nuru Yakubu.THISDAY gathered that Egwu had requested the union to give government six months to examine its demands.
Meanwhile, a committee, whose membership would include two ASUP members, is to be set up to deliberate on the union's demands and make recommendations to government. National Publicity Secretary of the union, Mr Victor Dawurung, who confirmed this to newsmen in Jos, said the decisions reached at weekend's meeting is expected to be put in black and white and handed to the union during the week. He, therefore, called on members of the union not to go ahead with the strike action, as the National Executive Council (NEC) shall convene an emergency meeting in Gwagwalada, Abuja, on Thursday, to decide the next line of action.
ASUP had resolved to go on an indefinite nation-wide strike action, starting today, if the Federal Government refuses to address such issues as the welfare of its members, as it had, according to it, exhausted its patience.
