Nigeria: Back to Roots

5 January 2009

Lagos — News out of Holland has it on authority that Ajax Amsterdam plan to lure Nwankwo Kanu, known popularly here in Nigeria by the pen-name of Papillo, back to the Amsterdam Arena, the old haunt he used to install himself as a king of sort in both club and international football.

In one of the most unexpected transfer reports of the current winter market, the lords of Ajax have sensationally declared that one of their priorities this term is hooking on to Kanu for a return to his glorious hunting ground of the early 90s.

To this end, the highly renowned player, who has the honour to be the most decorated Nigerian player in history, could make an extraordinary return to the Eredivisie club, where he previously had a spell before joining Inter Milan of Italy, from where the 'professor', Arsene Wenger, picked him for another glorious stint at the Highbury, the home of Arsenal, before they moved to the Emirates Stadium.

But everything may not go that swinging for the Dutch club in the pursuit of the old Nigerian fox, as another big team has been reported as having interest in bringing the player to its fold; Serie A's Fiorentina.

For now, the only clue as to which of the sides Kanu might end up with, is in the fact that Ajax, in their resolve to return the player they were responsible to helping made, are planning to up the ante on the Kanu pursuit by thumping up their one million pound offer to £2.5 million. Kanu came strongly into the Ajax picture after the departure of one of their attacking gems, Klaas-Jan Huntelaar to Spain, to join the Bernabeu crew of the super stars team, Real Madrid.

Based on the departure of Huntelaar, Ajax now require a quality replacement that they can get at a cheap prize, in order to safe some dollars from their sales of Huntelaaar, a move that would go a long way in helping them to balance the books in these days of global financial meltdown.
