Nigeria: 'National Theatre Generated N38 Million in 2008'

3 January 2009

Lagos — Management of the National Arts Theatre in Lagos made a revenue of N38 million in 2008. Chief Executive of the complex, Dr. Ahmed Yerima, said in Lagos, that the revenue generated was an improvement over the almost N16 million recorded in 2007.

"It is good for us because it is the result of the improvement on our facilities which we hope to improve upon in the coming year," he said.

He said the management had bought a 32mm film equipment to show big movies in collaboration with Silverbird Galleria.

Yerima also said the management had embarked on a massive rehabilitation of the edifice in a renewed bid to attract as many customers as possible.

The director-general added that security had been improved to ensure that lives and properties were safe during and after the festive season. He noted with regret that the theatre had not been able to reclaim its landed space to develop and generate fund with it.

"With the cash revision in the budget, we lost the contract to reclaim the land space to build amusement park and a five star hotel which would have been completed through private partnership initiative," he said.

Yerima, who is also the Director of the National Troupe of Nigeria disclosed that the troupe performed in countries such as Brazil, Ethiopia, Cuba and India in 2008 to showcase the country's vast culture. He called on private investors to support and promote the cultural troupe for it to improve on its productions.
