Nigeria: Minister Makes Case for Youths

Bauchi — Minister of Police Affairs, Alhaji Yakubu Ibrahim Lame, has said human capacity development remains a fundamental key to the future of youths as well as the socio-economic development of any society.

Lame, who spoke at the presentation of items to 176 youths drawn from Dass, Tafawa Balewa and Bogoro Federal Constituency in Bauchi State, who benefited from a skill acquisition training provided by a member representing their constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Yukubu Dogara, said the provision of human and capital empowerment opportunities for youths would go a long way in riding the society of crime.

He said "if the youth of today are not trained to shoulder the responsibility of taking the leadership, then the future is bleak," adding that" rather than giving money to the youth, Dogara has done the best thing by empowering the youth through skill acquisition and economic empowerment".

The minister stated the era we are now calls for training and retraining if the youth are to be responsible persons who will take the mantle of leadership and therefore urged other politicians to emulate the good gesture of Dogara in empowering their constituencies.

Lame stated that the training of youth in various skill acquisitions is in accordance with the philosophy of the People Democratic Party (PDP), whose objective is to eradicate poverty through giving training and empowering the youth and the underprivileged in the society adding that the cardinal programme of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is to ensure that every youth is empowered to be self employed rather than looking unto the government for provision of jobs.

The minister commended the constituency for maintaining peace noting that there would be no meaningful development in a situation where crisis is frequent.

He urged the communities to continue to support their member so that more dividend of democracy would be provided to them.

Earlier in his speech, the House member representing Dass, Tafawa Balewa and Bogoro Federal Constituency at the House of Representatives, Hon. Yakubu Dogara, had explained that the skill acquisition programme as well as the equipment cost him N8.5 million, while the empowerment items valued at N9 million were also distributed to the beneficiaries.
