Nigeria: Adamawa Pledge 4,000 Helmets

The Adamawa State government has promised to provide 4,000 preventive crash-helmets for onward distribution to the commercial Achaba motorcycle riders in the state, so as to succeed in the campaign for the use of the helmets across the state by the Okada riders.

Governor Murtala Hamma Yero Nyako made the promise on Friday at a flag-off enforce the use of the preventive crash-helmets by the Federal Road Safety (FRSC) in Yola.

The governor, who was represented by the commissioner for information, Alhaji Musa Bubakari Kamale, assured the motorcyclists that his administration will do everything possible to contribute toward compliance with the law.

The sector commander of the FRSC in Adamawa State, Mr. Clement Oladele, said the commission intensify patrol in the state until the people and the commercial okada riders comply with the safety regulations.

Mr. Clement said anyone who refused to comply with the law would face the penalty for the offence.

He said those who don't comply with the law would be forced to buy two crash-helmets at a time, and also embark on a compulsory seven days enlightenment programme.

correspondent, reports that the okada riders in the state earlier went on a peaceful demonstration on Wednesday to protest against the use of the helmet.

Our correspondent reports that there was no accident or serious exchange of words with the security officials.

But with the intervention of the government, promising to assist with 4000 pieces of the preventive crash-helmets, tension in Adamawa at the time of filing this report subsided.

Some of the okada riders who spoke to our correspondent commended the government They rebuked motorcycles spare parts dealers in the state for selling the product to them at N5,000 to N7,000 within a period of 2 days.

They said without the help of God who made the government intervene, the prices of the helmets could have gone beyond the reach of the common man, as the open markets dealers intended to sell it above N10,000 in time to come.
