Nigeria: Politicians Tasked On Transparency, Accountability

4 January 2009

Politicians in the country have been advised to shun politics of blackmail and the pull-down syndrome.

The chairman of Ogbadibo local government council area of Benue State, Clement Agada, said this while speaking with leadership Sunday in his Otukpo residence. He regretted continuous levelling of frivolous allegations on some public office-olders by those he described as detractors.

Agada, who also spoke against the backdrop of allegations of financial impropriety and abuse of public office, as well as the non-payment of councillors and staff of the local government levelled against him, dared anybody with reliable evidence to take them to the appropriate authorities.

He said all monies accruing to the local government's treasury from the federation's account were duly accounted for, in line with his discipline. He said the council legislature is briefed monthly on the account status of the council.

He said in line with the rule of law mantra of President Umar Musa Yar'Adua's administration, he was the first person who advocated the monthly publication of local government funds in the national dailies, as a measure to being transparent and accountable in the running of the third tier of government.

He said that his commitment to service stems from his philosophy of leadership, which is a call for service and not personal aggrandisement..
