Nigeria: Subowa Gets Ijamido Children's Home Awards

5 January 2009

The Serving Union Bank Officers/Wives Association (SUBOWA) and Mrs. Jane Ebong, its President, were among the recipients of meritorious awards conferred by the Ijamido Children's Home, Ota, Ogun State to mark the Home's 50th anniversary celebrations.

Mrs. Ebong who announced the adoption of a child of the Home's choice in her personal capacity considered the honours as an encouragement and impetus for her and SUBOWA to do more for the needy in the society. The wife of the Group Managing Director/Chief Executive of Union Bank of Nigeria PLC pledged to use her position to provide succour to the underprivileged ones in the society; positing that the Union Bank Group supports such ventures as its corporate social responsibility.

Mrs. Ebong received the award for being a caring, loving and generous mother whose financial and material contributions have been of immense benefits to the Home. She was identified as a pillar of tremendous support not only in her individual capacity, but her pivotal and leadership role as the President of SUBOWA.

SUBOWA's recognition came not only as a result of the Association's caring, financial and material contributions, but also, two children of the Home, namely Titilayo Willoughby and Henry Daisy Willoughby, had been adopted and are on the full scholarship of the Association.

Ijamido Children's Home was established at Ota in 1958 by Late Chief (Mrs.) Irene Virginia Willoughby (Nee Liverpool) for abandoned babies, orphans, motherless, destitute and less privileged. The Home has continued to grow and prosper through individual and corporate assistance.

The colourful golden jubilee held at the Lagos Sheraton Hotels, chaired by Mr. Tunji Moore witnessed a large turnout of top philanthropists and children of the Home.
