As part of preparations for the handing over ceremony of the presidential baton, from President John Agyekum Kufuor to the new president-elect, Professor John Evans Fiifi Atta Mills, waste management experts, Zoomlion Ghana Limited has organised a special clean up exercise to rid the capital city off filth for the historic occasion.
A visit round the capital city, after the declaration of the election results by the Electoral Commissioner, Dr. Afari Gyan last Saturday, saw sympathisers of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) pouring onto the streets of Accra, amidst jubilation and chanting of the "yere sesamu" slogan.
This joyous mood rekindled business activities in the capital city, after an initial slow down, which resulted in the drop of consumer spending.
Makola, Okashie and most of the principal streets in Accra, were engulfed in filth, a clear indication that business activities were back to normal.
A visit to the Independence Square, where the handing over ceremony would take place on Wednesday, January 7th, saw the waste management experts busily putting things in order, to give it a new face for the memorable occasion.
An interview with the Accra Zonal Supervisor of Zoomlion, Robert Tetteh Coleman, revealed that the company (ZoomLion) after the Christmas festivities and the declaration of the election results, decided to rid the city off filth, to make it more hygienic for the august event.
"We want to work assiduously to rid the city off filth, and to prepare it for the handing over ceremony of the presidential baton," noted Coleman.
Some workers of the company were busily seen painting the Independence Square and its environs, whilst others were replacing broken down facilities in the washrooms at the Square.
According to Coleman, his outfit had designed a special strategy that would see the company working 24 hours a day, beginning from Sunday to Wednesday, when the handing over ceremony would take place.
The special strategy, he said, would see some of the company's workers at post in the evenings. "This would enable us meet our target of making the city clean before the ceremony," he added.
Many people have the perceived the notion that ZoomLion Ghana Limited was a pro-New Patriotic Party (NPP) institution, a situation, which according to Coleman, was not true."ZoomLion is never a pro-NPP organization or an anti-NDC organization. It is a private entity, with the sole agenda of working to improve sanitation conditions in the country," he said.
According to him, his outfit, irrespective of any political party that comes into power, would continue to work hard to improve sanitation in the country.
