Nigeria: Shekarau Boosts Club With N300 Million

With a view to ensuring adequate preparations ahead of the forthcoming CAF Champions League encounters, Kano state government has disbursed about N300m to the Kano Pillars Football Club through its Continental Committee.

Kano State governor, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau stated this while presenting the 2009 Ap-propriation Bill tagged: "Budget of Sustainable Economic Grow-th" to the state House of As-sembly.

Shekarau said since the club has made history by becoming the first Northern Nigerian club-side to win the Premier League competition, his administration has been supportive since as-sumption into office in 2003.

"In the last three months alo-ne, we disbursed about N300m to the club as part of the state government's efforts to ensure that Pillars represent the country well in the Confederation Cup, and also maintain its impressive tempo," the governor revealed.

In a similar development, the governor also said that Kano Pillars Basketball team too is a source of pride to the state go-vernment as it emerged winner of the nation's basketball Pre-mier League.

Harping on the Pillars Basket-ball team's achievements, he said they also become the over-all winner in the FIBA Africa Zone 3 Club Championship qua-lifier, having defeated Union Bank of Lagos 87-76 and rep-resented the country at the just-concluded basketball continen-tal engagement in Tunisia.

Malam Shekarau however, said that the state government has also allocated the sum of N46.9million to the state Sports Council for its activities which include the construction of zonal sports centers, construc-tion of sitting facilities at the Kano Pillars Stadium, Sabon Gari, construction of stands and conveniences at Race Course and a gymnasium.

In addition, Shekarau revea-led that the state government has set aside the sum of N11.3m for the completion of Oneya Shopping Complex at the Pillars Stadium.
