Harare — HARARE City Council has received aluminium sulphate for water purification from the United Nations Children's Fund
According to the 1778th ordinary council minutes, Mayor Mr Muchadeyi Masunda said the aluminium sulphate was enough for four months.
He said representatives of Unicef were also expected to visit various areas which were affected by cholera. Mr Masunda could not divulge the quantities received.
Council also received some medical supplies from the German Embassy which were not specifically linked to the cholera outbreak but to complement health services at council clinics. "The medical supplies were yet to be approved by the Medicines Control Council before they could be used," read part of the minutes.
Meanwhile, the city council has released a report with statistics of the recent cholera outbreak in Harare.
According to the report, a total of 209 fatalities were recorded out of 8 553 cases as at December 1, 2008.
The report said the cholera outbreak was noticed in the city on October 25 and the city's health department closely monitored the situation from then. Beatrice Road Infectious Disease Hospital was then put on high alert and an isolation ward for cholera patients was created and resources mobilised internally.
