Zimbabwe: Winner Booed

6 January 2009

Harare — LOVELY Tariro Karima of Concession was at the weekend crowned Miss Unique Mashonaland Central amid jeering from the crowd.

The 16-year-old was booed as she was announced the winner of the pageant by the chief judge Titus Kambarami who had come all the way from Harare.

Asked about the decision, Kambarami said the noise was a result of hooligans who had invaded the show.

"I think as judges we did a good job, but the contest was messed up by hooligans bent on causing chaos," he said.

However, it was not clear which model the crowd wanted, as there were jeers throughout the show as models took the ramp.

Tariro beat 23 other models to clinch the title while Cynthia Mukandiwa (18) was her first princess and Mildred Mapisaunga (16) was voted the second princess.

For coming up tops, Tariro won R500 while the first and second princesses got R400 and R300 respectively.

The other models were expected to receive R50 and hampers each as consolation prizes.

Urban groover Stunner, who was the main act, thrilled music lovers with his energetic dances.

The pageant held at Shamva Country Club saw 24 models drawn from Shamva, Bindura, Mazowe and Mt Darwin taking part.

The event was organised by the Miss Unique Mashonaland Trust in partnership with DAPP Child Aid Bindura/Shamva and Hope Centre Bindura.

This year's pageant was held under the theme "Societal unity and behavioural change is the cornerstone for HIV and Aids prevention. Abstinence breeds life to models."
