Nigeria: Lesser Chiefs Shun Meeting With Olubadan

Tunde Sanni

6 January 2009

Ibadan — Four embattled Ibadan lesser chiefs who are in contention with the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Samuel Odulana, for elevation as crown-wearing kings yesterday shunned the meeting summoned by the monarch.

Odulana had scheduled a meeting of Mogajis (community heads) and village heads under his domain for yesterday where the fate of the chiefs who are clamouring for elevation was to be decided.

The affected chiefs are Baale of Ido, Chief Benjamin Ishola, Onijaye of Ijaye, Chief Oladejo Egunjobi, and Onilalupon of Lalupon, Chief Akinmoyede Olahanloye and Baale of Latunde, Chief Ladosun Latunde.

Though they were absent at the meeting, the Olubadan-in-Council threatened to depose the embattled chiefs in case of their insistence on their agitation to wear the beaded crown.

The council however condemned the plan by the government to give approval for the elevation of the chiefs.

The Olubadan-in-Council maintained that the chiefs could have their say but contended that they would never have their way on the issue as the rules guiding the chieftaincy titles in the ancient city would be implemented to the letter.

The meeting had all the members of Olubadan-in-Council,namely Chief Bode Amao, Chief Omowale Kuye, Ambassador Olu Saanu, Senator Lekan Balogun, Chief Theophilus Akinyele, Alhaji Azeem Gbolarumi and other important sons and daughters of Ibadan in attendance.

They called on the state governor, Adebayo Alao-Akala, to prevail on the state Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Hosea Ayoola Agboola, to order over alleged unnecessary division of Ibadanland to municipal and less city.

The communique which was signed by the Secretary of the Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes, Chief Gbade Lana, advised the government not to disorganise the orderly arrangement of Ibadan chieftaincy titles.

It read: "the recent attempts by a number of Baales to seek approval of the state government to wear the beaded crown should be rejected. The approval of the beaded crown for any Baale constitutes an assault to our valued custom and tradition."
