Nigeria: Helmet Compliance - FRSC Gives Kubwa Cyclists Pass Mark

The Kubwa unit commander of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Tanimu Ali Sule, yesterday said that 50 percent of Kubwa cyclists have started complying with the safety helmet directives of the commission.

He said more motorcyclists are now using the safety device, adding that the aggressive enforcement embarked by his unit forced many of the cyclists to procure their own helmets.

"The level of enforcement within his jurisdiction has paid off as lesser numbers of violators are been apprehended by our men as compared to 75 that were arrested on the first day of the commencement of the enforcement," he said.

Speaking further, Tanimu promised to extend the helmet usage campaign to Dutse Alhaji, Bwari and other communities within his jurisdiction, adding that he will ask for the assistance of the Bwari divisional police officer for the enforcement of the law.

"Law enforcement is not a one man's job that is why we want to ask for the assistance of the police in all the communities within our jurisdiction, so that we can jointly ensure the success of the campaign as arresting motorcyclists is a more daunting task than arresting motorists, hence we are going to collaborate with other law enforcement agencies to arrest the recalcitrant ones among the motorcyclists," Tanimu stated.

He commended the motorcyclists in Kubwa that have been complying with the helmet usage directive, urging them to continue to do so as the FRSC will not relent in its effort to reduce accidents on the road to the barest minimum.

The Kubwa FRSC boss however expressed disappointment with the attitude of most motorcyclists' passengers that refuse to wear helmets, saying that such attitudes is disappointing and counterproductive.

He advised those that refuse such helmets to either desist from such acts or better still look for another means of transportation other than motorcycles.

"Motorcyclists should not carry such passengers, as doing so will attract severe punishment from the FRSC," he said.

The unit commander also warned cyclists that wear painted calabash, industrial helmets, painted plastic and plates instead of crash helmets to desist from such acts, adding that wearing such fake helmets will not prevent them from sustaining head injuries when accident occurs.

He also commended motorists and other road users plying the Kubwa express road for their good conduct during the yuletide, which, according to him, made the road accident-free.
