Nigeria: Criminals Continue Attacks From Nyanya Cemetery

5 January 2009

Criminals that hide inside Nyanya cemetery at night and in the early hours of the morning have continued to attack residents of the area.A male traveler returning from the village on a bike was over the weekend attacked by the miscreants close to the cemetery.

According to an eye witness, the victim's cry for help at around 5.30 am made residents rush out to assist him.

"When we got there, the criminals had vanished leaving only the victim and cyclist, with the victim crying aloud that the thieves took away his luggage," he said.

Residents in the area said the thieves also struck at a lady, who was returning back from church in the early hours of the morning.

"They frightened the lady with a gun and removed her bag containing three expensive handsets and an undisclosed sum of money," a resident said.

Our reporter also learnt that the miscreants normally plant nails on the roads around the area in order to rob motorists that have flat tyres.

When our reporter visited the cemetery Sunday night, weeds had taken over the place while some part of the fence had been pulled down. People smoking Indian hemp as well as those defecating were noticed inside the place.

Officials of the Abuja Municipal Area Council when contacted earlier said they were not aware of the cemetery being used as a criminal den.

The spokesperson of the council assured residents of the area that AMAC has plans for the cemetery, while a police officer at Nyanya Police Station said such reports have not been received by them.
