Nigeria: House Committee on Jos Crisis Begins Sitting in Jos

The Committee set up by the House of Representatives to investigate the causes of the recent crisis that followed Plateau State Local Government election in Jos began sitting yesterday in Jos.

The chairman of the committee, Architect Isah Idris Umaru said they were in Jos to receive memoranda from the general public.

He urged any Nigerian who has anything about the Jos crisis to forward it to the committee between Tuesday January 6 and Saturday January 10 2009.

Architect Idris added that the committee would continue receiving memoranda at the National Assembly complex in Abuja from January 11 to 20. He appealed to the general public, especially the People of Plateau state to co-operate with the members to enable them discharged their legislative duties successfully.

The Chairman said the committee members were neutral, adding that they "only want to give the Plateau state Government a little help to understand the true causes of Jos crises and prefer legislative solutions on how to make laws that will prevent future occurrence, un like before when only state governments are investigating the crisis."

He appealed to Journalist to be fair and objective in reporting the activities of the committee to enable them succeed and to move the country forward.

Other Members of the committee include Chile Igbahuwa, from Benue state, Adefolabi Adeole, Lagos state, Darlington Orkarde, Ebonyi state, Abdul Ningi, Bauchi state, Johnson Abologbo, Edo state, Sani Saleh Minjibir , Kano state, Abdullahi Garba Bungudu Kano state and Ezenne Nwacheize Secretary of the committee.

In a related Development a group called Confederation of Plateau Youth Movement said they would not attend the committee's sitting and critic-ized the composition of the Members of the Committee at a press briefing addressed by the chairman of the group, Mr Silas Vem.

He said the composition of the members was not fair to the Christian community because out of the eight members of the committee three are Christian Five are Muslims, and criticized Abdul Ningi who moved the motion for the setting up of the committee.

Mr Silas said "Abdul Ningi who sentimentally moved the motion for setting up of the committee how did he find himself among its members" he asked.
