Nigeria: Contractor Mobilises to Site Over Threat of Court Action

Awka — FOLLOWING the threat by the Anambra State government to drag the contractor handling the reconstruction of the Zik"s avenue in Awka to court for alleged sabotage, the contractor, Reynolds Construction Company (RCC) has mobilized its workers to site and work has started in earnest.

The road has been a subject of controversy following the delay in execution of the contract. It was initially awarded by former Governor Chris Ngige and continued by Governor Peter Obi who redesigned it.

Obi had repeatedly assured that the road would be completed before the end of last year, but as soon as the rains stopped, rather than commence work on the road, the company"s workers embarked on strike and only resumed a few weeks to Christmas and could not do much.

As a result, the state government threatened to take the company to court or revoke the contract.National chairman of the ruling All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Chief Victor Umeh, while supporting the government"s threat, said the stakeholders in the party directed the governor to take RCC to court if it failed to go back to site by the 10th of January.

Umeh said yesterday that it was good that RCC was back on site, adding that based on intelligence report, he was convinced that the company"s workers were being influenced to slow down work.

"Today is 5th and I am happy to note that they have responded and we pray that they carry out the work aggressively. If anybody is influencing them, they should understand the risk involved in collecting government"s money without doing the job."
