Nigeria: Doctors Abandon Patients As Police Invade Hospital

THERE was commotion at the State-government owned General Hospital Okwe, yesterday, following the invasion of the hospital by police leading to rowdiness and patients admitted there were abandoned.

It was gathered that trouble started when some persons involved in a traffic accident were rushed to the hospital for treatment including a certain army officer.

Details of the accident was still sketchy but while the treatment was going on, the medical doctor on duty offering treatment to the wounded was manhandled by some policemen, who allegedly questioned him for allowing some persons already treated to go home on the account that were accused in the said accident.

Not satisfied with the explanation of the medical doctor, who told them that his job is to offer treatment and not to arrest suspects, the medical doctor was manhandled and injured in the neck.

As at the time of this report, tension was still high there as patients were abandoned on their hospital beds.

Meanwhile, the matter is being handled by men of the Police "B"Division Asaba.

Efforts to get the State police command's spokesman for comments were unsuccessful as at the time of this report while some relations who have patients at the hospital were making arrangements to relocate them as the disagreement remained unresolved between the hosptial personnel and police, who later came with more reinforcement.
