Uganda: Government Urged to Control Firearms

Kampala — THE Government has been urged to disarm civilians to curb the increasing cases of homicide.

The Archbishop of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church, Pr. John Wani, condemned the rampant murder cases of spouses, saying Police should augment its investigations so that culprits do not go free.

"Many Ugandans have proved to be blind to the gospel we preach. Husbands are slaughtering their wives," he lamented.

The Police recently reported that over 86 Ugandans were last year murdered by their spouses.

Adultery and drunkenness were the major causes of such cases, the Police said.

Wani was speaking at the ordination of pastors at Kireka Hill SDA Church on Sunday.

"It has become a fashion for one to get a pistol and kill his or her spouse," he said.

Wani also called upon religious leaders to get back to the Biblical teachings and to avoid misleading their followers.

He said although clerics were susceptible to making mistakes, they should shun using the Bible to defraud unsuspecting followers.

"Religion is where every one should be accepted as equal. We should not discriminate Christians basing on their wealth," he advised.

Pastors Rogers Kaggwa, the chaplain Luzira Hillside College, Moses Tamukedde of Ssese, Hannington Ntuulo of Katikamu SDA, Moses Damba, Godfrey Lubwama and Moses Maka were ordained.

Wani urged the ordained pastors to preach the truth of the Bible and to lead exemplary lives so as to reduce evil in the country.
