Nigeria: VC Charges Politicians on Sportsmanship

Lagos — Vice-Chancellor, Babcock University Ilishan Remo, Ogun State, Prof. Kayode Makinde has said Nigerian politics would be free of bitterness if politicians could imbibe the spirit of sportsmanship.

He made the remark at the 14th annual inter-house sports competition of Babcock University High School in Ogun State.

Makinde, who was represented by the Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Management Service, Prof Dayo Alao, condemned the recent killings in Jos, Plateau State, adding that Nigerian politics should not be practiced in a way that would bring rivalry or unhealthy competition.

Principal of the School, Elder Timothy Adetayo said the school believed in holistic development of a person and the annual sporting event was aimed at achieving this.

Chairman Parents Teachers Association (PTA), Mr. Olalekan Jagun said the turnout of invited schools indicated Babcock's good relationship within the community, adding that the participants displayed the spirit of sportsmanship in the course of the event.

He commended students' level of discipline at the event, saying, "children should be encouraged to participate in sports because it is a veritable tool for character building."

Chairperson at the event, Olori Folasade Kasali commended the school for organising the competition every year. "Sports create unity, make students alert and parents happy."
