Angola: Local Sculptor Considers Culture Day as Reflection for Creators

6 January 2009

Luanda — The Angolan sculptor Massongui Afonso "Afó" affirmed this Tuesday in Luanda that 8 January, National Culture Day represents a moment for continuous reflection for the national creators on their contribution to the country's progress after six years of peace.

Speaking to Angop, the artist said that there are more and more productions of artistic works, both in plastic arts, literature, theatre, music and in other modalities, which shows how the artists are interested in taking their new ideas and creations close to the society.

The 8 January holiday was instituted as National Culture Day in reference to the intervention of the first and late president of Angola António Agostinho Neto, when he swore in the first management board members of the Angolan Writers Union (UEA) in 1978.
