Angola: Conquest of Ninth African Handball Trophy Marks 2008

7 January 2009

Luanda — The conquest of the ninth African handball championship by the Angolan senior female team and the election of Pedro Godinho as chairman of the Angolan Handball Federation (FAA) marked the year 2008 in this field.

The national squad conquered the African championship held in Angola, having won all the nine matches of that competition.

On the other hand, Pedro Godinho was elected chairman of the Angolan Handball Federation to replace Archer Mangueira who was in charge of the federation for eight years.

FAA's chairman was appointed by the Confederation of African Handball to run the Committee for Competitions Organisation during the Consultative Advisory Council of that institution held in Casablanca, Morocco.

Pedro Godinho disputed the post with the Algerian Rachid Masturi but at last he was chosen by the new management of the confederation, due to his experience as deputy chairman of the Committee for Competitions Organisation and the work he did in that post.

Regarding the renewal of mandates, Francis Lawrence was elected chairman of the board of the Provincial Handball Association of Luanda (APAL), replacing 'scar Rodrigues, who was for eight years ahead of that association.

In men's category, the Angolan squad occupied the fourth position of the continental competition held in Angola, when the objective was to stand among the first three.

Egypt were the champions of this tournament, after beating the title holders, Tunisia, by 27-25.

The Angolan senior female handball team had a negative participation in the Olympic Games in Beijing, China, where they lost six matches and had one draw.

The senior female handball team of Petro de Luanda maintained the hegemony in the internal and external competitions, by winning the national championship, Babacar Fall Super Cup, the African cup of cups tournament and the African champions clubs cup.

In males category, 1º de Agosto won the national handball championship and Angola League Cup, while at the international level, the team failed to retain the title and occupied the fourth position in the champions clubs league. The other Angolan representative, Kabuscorp of Palanca, ended up in the sixth place.

This sport also experienced very sad moments with the death of the main coach of Petro de Luanda, Armando Gomes "Culau", by road accident.

The other news that shook the sport is the death of Fernando Moreira, a former coach of the Angolan junior female handball team of ASA, victim of a heart attack.
