Ghana: No Political Discrimination This Time, NDC Chairman

Micael Boateng

7 January 2009

Sunyani — The Brong-Ahafo Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Owusu Agyemang, has given the assurance that the president-elect, Prof. John Evans Atta Mills, would not discriminate among Ghanaians, because it was all of them who elected him.

He said there was no need for any Ghanaian, particularly workers, to entertain fears of intimidation under the new NDC government.

Mr. Agyemang was speaking at a press conference in Sunyani over the weekend, to express the party's appreciation to the chiefs and people of the Brong Ahafo Region.

He commended the people of the region for electing Prof. J. E. A. Mills as the next president of Ghana.

According to him, the NDC government would cooperate with the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to build the country, just as it was done when the NDC was in opposition for eight years, saying "we will continue to play a clean politics with the NPP, just as when we were in opposition."

Mr. John Owusu Agyemang added that it was through this cooperation with the NPP that the country would benefit from the current democratic dispensation, for rapid development.

The Regional Chairman said the era of political discrimination and intimidation should be a thing of the past for Ghana to move forward, stressing that the NDC government, under the leadership of Prof Mills, would work assiduously towards uniting Ghanaians, regardless of political affiliations.

However, Mr. Owusu Agyemang was quick to indicate that those who were not fit for their current positions should prepare to leave for qualified personnel to take over, for quality delivery of services.

He accused the NPP government, under President Kufuor, for politically polarising the nation, where people without NPP colours fell victim to being either denied enjoying certain benefits, or refusing promotion at work places.

According to Mr. Owusu Agyemang, unlike the NPP government, the NDC administration would ensure a free, secured, fair and united state, where everybody would get his or her fair share of the national cake.

He added that people would work with free and objective minds, devoid of political intimidations, and gain promotions when due under the new NDC government.

He was optimistic that with the support of Ghanaians, who called for a change and thereby voted for Prof. Mills, members of parliament from all the political divides would move forward in peace and unity as expected.
