Kano — Governor Ibrahim Shekarau of Kano State has attributed the collapse of major financial institutions as a result of the current International financial crisis to corruption.
He lamented that Nigeria does not have automatic immunity to the crisis, pointing out that the only remedy to the scourge is to fight corruption on all fronts.
Shekarau stated that his administration has embraced a dual strategy of prevention and meting out punitive measures to reduce corruption drastically in the state in line with best international practices; disclosing that efforts are on to transform the state Public Complaints and Anti - Corruption Directorate to a Commission.
Speaking in Kano, the Governor stressed that the government hopes to be guided by an appropriate blueprint for the realisation of good governance, while warning that the state government policy to check the corruption is always ready to dealt with anyone caught.
The Director-General of the state's Anti-Corruption Directorate, Alhaji Aminu Inuwa Muhammad, said the workshop's objective was to allow senior officers in the public service to appreciate the need to work diligently, observe rules and regulations, and update their skills for good governance.
Muhammad explained that attention would focus on measures to improve accountability, budget processes and implementation, public financial management and auditing.
The guest speaker, Dr. Bashir Aliyu Umar, spoke at length on accountability and transparency under Sharia, stressing that public office is a trust; and that public officials are not only answerable to the people but also to God.
