Abuja — Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) yesterday said it was worried over the plan by some political parties in the country to form a mega party with the aim of wrestling power from the ruling PDP in 2011.
It had therefore advised its members to close ranks and resist the plans to cause disaffection within the party that could lead to its disintegration.
This came as the party also held a close door meeting with the stakeholders in Anambra state, including former Vice President, Dr. Alex Ekwueme, Prof. A.B.C. Nwosu, Dr Obinna Uzo, as well as speaker and principal officers of the Anambra State House of Assembly among others, on the future of the party in the state.
The party's governorship candidate in the April 2007 general elections, Dr. Andy Ubah, was however absent at the parley.
"The opposition political parties are planning to come together to form a grand alliance that will fight and defeat PDP. Some are thinking of launching other parties to attract PDP members and members of other parties to fight and defeat PDP. All manners of plans and plots are being hatched to defeat PDP."
"Even this crisis in Anambra state is sending signal that it is possible to divide PDP and defeat it in Anambra state or anywhere else. All those who are plotting will be encouraged.
"I believe none of us here or no member of our great party will like to have such signals sent to our opponents who are planning and plotting on how to deal with the PDP," Deputy National Chairman, Dr. Harilu Bello, said at a meeting held at the PDP national secretariat.
Bello, who stood in for the National Chairman of the party, Chief Vincent Ogbulafor, cautioned members of the party against any action that would create opportunity for opposition parties to defeat it in 2011, hinting of plans and plots to deal with the PDP.
He also used the occasion to appeal to members of the party in the state to close ranks and forget their differences in order to move the party forward.Bello also stressed the need for the party to reclaim the Anambra South senatorial seat which the party lost recently in the forthcoming bye-election.
