Owerri — The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Owerri Zone, said it is dismayed with "the poor level of funding experienced by Imo State University (IMSU), Owerri, and the inappropriate response by the state government to the challenges faced by the institution".

The ASUU Zonal leadership made their feelings known in a press statement signed by Zonal Coordinator, Dr. Samuel M. Nzotta, as well as ASUU Chairmen of University of Port Harcourt, IMSU, Rivers State University of Science and Technology and Federal university of Technology, Owerri, Dr. Andrew Efemini, Mr. V. Nwulu, Mrs. Emilia Jaja and Dr. R. Ejimofor respectively.

"We also note the poor learning environment created as a result, including the poor level of staff motivation. We appeal to the University Governing Council to urgently honour their commitments, to the striking workers to enable the institution reopen for normal academic activities", the union leaders pleaded.

They recalled that IMSU-ASUU members asked for the payment of the arrears of monetization and Consolidated University Academic Salary Scale (CONUASS), which they claim have been iplemented by other universities in the country.
