The National Treasurer of the Ghana Timber Association (GTA), Mr. Issac Kofi Nketiah, has commended President John Evans Atta Mills for the nomination, and subsequent confirmation of the Justice Joyce Bamford Addo, as the new Speaker of Parliament.
He, however, thinks the desire to ensure gender balance in the control of state institutions, would not be complete without the appointment of a woman to head the Ghana Police Service.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with The Chronicle in Accra on Tuesday, Mr. Nketiah, an ex-police officer, said no woman had ever headed the Police Service, ever since it was established, and thinks the time had come for them to also be considered by the President, just as he has done to Parliament.
He noted that the current deputy IGP, Mrs. Mills-Robertson, who is one of the senior officers in the service, deserves the position of IGP.
Nketia further told The Chronicle that though women constituted over 51% of the population of Ghana, they have been relegated to the background for a long time, and that this is the time to give them the chance.
The GTA Treasurer also noted that though he was not playing tribal cards, the Central Region, to the best of his knowledge, had never produced any IGP. Therefore, to him it would be more appropriate if Mills-Robertson was given the opportunity.
Nketiah also appealed to President Mills to appoint a good minister to handle the Ministry of Lands, Forestry and Mines.
He said with the exception of Mrs. Amoako Nuamah, who would forever be remembered by members of the GTA, for the way and manner she handled affairs at the ministry during her tenure of office, the rest of the ministers were arrogant, and handled affairs of the ministry without listening to advice.
According to him, the ministry was a sensitive one, and that only competent ministers should be appointed to handle affairs there.
He, on behalf of the GTA, congratulated Prof. Mills on his election as President of Ghana.
He was hopeful that he would steer the affairs of the nation very well for the next four years, to ensure the growth of businesses in the country, and its concomitant creation of employment.
