Kampala — THE Police on Wednesday raided Biafra slums in Mbarara town and uprooted a garden of marijuana.

The district Police commander, Ivan Nkwasibwe, said the garden belonged to 55-year-old Joseph Rugumba.

The move followed complaints from the public that the area was "a haven" for marijuana smokers and criminals.

"That place harbours criminals who snatch bags from passengers at the taxi park on Ntare Road and Mackhan Singh Street. We shall not give them time to commit crime. We urge the public to report criminals to curb insecurity," Nkwasibwe said.

According to the residents, Rugumba's home was a centre for the marijuana trade.

The Police will look for and uproot all marijuana gardens in the district, Nkwasibwe said.

He said the Police was also looking for Rugumba's group, which distributes the illegal drug to other districts in the region.

"We are working with other districts to stop drug trafficking.

We shall not only charge the owner of the marijuana, but also the taxi drivers whose vehicles are used to transport the drugs," Nkwasibwe warned.

Rugumba said the garden was planted by his neighbour, Odida, who is on the run.
