Uganda: Sajjabi Set to Rock Local Gospel Scene

Kampala — BRACE yourselves for the return of Suzette Sajjabbi, one of the pioneer local gospel music singers.

The sister to the late Apostle Deo Balabyekkubo, Suzette was best known at crusades for her song Simbangaina Lomboko.

She went to the US in 1991 where she was the co-pastor at the New Life Christian Church in Boston, Massachussets.

She is back home and recently threw a mega gospel concert at Kibuye Prayer Palace. It was the launch party of her latest album Ntambudde Naye. Sajjabi is poised to start a gospel music ministry for the Luzira prison inmates.

"I want to let everyone know that the good things God has done for me, He can also do for them. I also want to change the misconceptions that Ugandans are getting about the born-again faith due to a few errant pastors," Sajjabi says.

Ntambudde Naye is an 11-track masterpiece which includes songs that she wrote in the 1980s and only performed acapella style (with no instruments) at crusades. It also includes several new compositions.

The album is a medley of reggae, Afro beat, socca and rumba melodies. It was recorded at the Cool Mobile studios in Canada. It is, however, available for sale at Betty Nakibuuka Fashions on Zainabu Aziiza Emporium as well as leading gospel music outlets in Kampala.

The title track, Ntambudde Naye, is a chronicle of Sajjabbi's life ever since she became born-again more than three decades ago. The song also calls on others to follow in her footsteps and accept Jesus as their personal saviour.

The song, which is done to a fusion of African rhythms, is already getting fair airplay on FM radio and TV stations in Kampala.

So is Gwe Maanyi Gaange, another song off the album. Spirit of the Lord is currently getting tremendous airplay on Christian radio stations and some TV stations in the US.

It is a slow reggae track that is meant to encourage anyone who is discouraged by the realities of life.
