Liberia: President Sirleaf And World Leaders Discuss Global Economic Crisis

8 January 2009

Paris — Liberia's President Ellen is among several world leaders and heads of other financial and multi-lateral entities attending a meeting in Paris, France to discuss the global economic crisis.

Addressing the opening session of the 'New World, New Capitalism conference in the French capital, Paris, the co-sponsors French President Nicholas Sarkozy and former British Prime Minister, Tony Blair, called for a collective approach to tackle the financial crisis facing the world. The leaders expressed concern that some of the world's big economies such as China, Brazil, India and Africa, with a significant proportion of the world's population, have been excluded from consultations on how to address the financial crisis. They warned that unless there is a collaborative effort which addresses fundamental structural changes in the world's financial sector, a long-term solution will remain elusive.

French President Sarkozy, and German Chancellor Merkel, frowned on countries, they observed, want to impose their decisions on the world in finding a solution to the financial crisis. "We will not accept the imposition of a single power," Sarkozy cautioned, emphasizing that the world needs the support of all countries to find a solution.

An Executive Mansion dispatch from Paris says the conference enters its second and final day on Friday with Liberia's President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf serving as facilitator of a round-table session on how to regulate capitalism. President Sirleaf, the only African leader invited to the 2-day conference, will be sharing Africa's perspective on the crisis and the way forward.

The Liberian leader arrived in Paris Thursday morning at the Charles de Gaulle Airport in time for the opening session of the conference. The President was met on arrival by Liberia's ambassador to France, Ambassador McKinley Thomas.
