The Kogi chapter of All Farmers' Association of Nigeria (AFAN) on Monday called for more efforts to create an enabling environment toward attaining a robust agricultural economy in the country.
The AFAN Chairman, Dr Tunde Arosanyin, made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lokoja.Arosanyin urged the three tiers of government to expand access to loans for farmers at reduced interest rates to increase food production for local consumption and export.
He said that government at all levels should also commit substantial resources to the acquisition of modern agricultural technology.
He noted that subsistence farming, especially among rural farmers, would not check food scarcity and reduce prices of food items.
Arosanyin called on the government and the private sector to provide necessary impetus for market opportunities for large scale farmers to easily sell their products within and outside the country.
He stressed the need for the provision of modern storage facilities that would enable farmers to store surplus harvest.
This, he said, would ensure stability in the prices of food items and help stem hunger among the people.
