Nigeria: Yaya Abatan Gorge Needs Railings

8 January 2009

Since the completion of repairs of Yaya Abatan gorge along College Road in Ifako/Ijaiye Local Government Area, the deep gorge is still left open without metal railing protection to prevent people or even vehicles from falling into it.

As a result, the gorge has since remained a death trap and poses danger to motorists and pedestrians especially at night when most drivers drive recklessly.

On several occasions, there have been cases where buses, okada riders and their passengers nearly fell into the gorge due to over-speeding. Residents said it has been by divine intervention that they have been living there without major incident.

Lagos State Government must therefore call the contractor handling the work to do something urgently to prevent deadly incidents since most Lagos drivers are known for impatience and recklessness. Pedestrians and okada riders are more likely to be affected in the event of such dangerous occurrences.

Already, residents around the area have expressed apprehension over the apparent display of lack of commitment towards erecting metal protectors there. Aside this seemingly important aspect of the work which is left undone is the need for proper grading of the road.
