On 8 January 2008, a graduation ceremony marked the end of a five week MONUC training programme for 70 DRC Armed Forces (FARDC) officers from the 16th Integrated Battalion, at Luberizi military training camp in South Kivu province, 47 km north of Uvira.

In attendance at the ceremony was the MONUC South Kivu head of office Mr. Bernard Leloup, the FARDC 10th Military Region Acting commander General Pacifique Masunzu, South Kivu Vice Governor Jean-Claude Kibala and MONUC South Kivu Brigade commander Brigadier General Ghulam Hussain Ghumman, as well as other MONUC and local officials.

FARDC General Pacifique Masunzu congratulated the officers for a successful training programme, which is an example of good collaboration between the FARDC and MONUC.

South Kivu Vice-Governor Jean-Claude Kibala also congratulated the officers and thanked MONUC for assisting the DRC in the first step towards the formation of an integrated republican army. Three FARDC officers were awarded prizes for special merit, which was followed by a colourful parade, a karate exhibition and a cultural show that ended the ceremony.

The training, which started in early December 2008, was coordinated by MONUC's Training Task Force, composed of 15 MONUC Pakastani officers. The purpose of the course was to develop the leadership skills of FARDC officers and enhance their capacities.

Basic concepts on a broad range of military skills and tactics were explained to student officers in an interactive way, including courses in military rules and regulations, map reading, tactics, intelligence, staff procedures and logistics.

More than 3,000 FARDC soldiers were trained in Luberizi camp last year. These troops are now deployed in North Kivu and in some areas of South Kivu, and are highly appreciated for their professionalism.
