Kampala — WOMEN with disabilities in the north are the most affected by the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) war.
William Nokcrach, the MP representing persons with disabilities in the north, said as residents dodged attacks by the LRA, the deaf, blind and physically-impaired persons could not hide from the rebels.
He said persons with disabilities were now struggling with the ongoing resettlement programme from camps because they lack resources and physical abilities.
Announcing a fundraising dinner organised by the Gulu Disabled Persons at the Sheraton Kampala Hotel on Friday, Nokcrach and Sophia Nalule, the MP representing women with disabilities, called on the international community and governments to stop armed conflicts.
The organisers expect to raise sh100m to provide persons with disabilities in Gulu and Amuru districts with building materials to help them resettle in their home areas. The dinner, sponsored by Sheraton Hotel and Kampala Central Division, will be held on January 29.
Nalule said women and their families struggle to survive during armed conflicts in which most have died.
The MPs also appealed to the LRA chief, Joseph Kony, to stop fighting and sign a peace deal with the Government in order to end the 20-year-long war.
"We thank the Government for its support and other development partners but the situation remains very difficult for persons with disabilities in the resettlement programme," Nalule said.
