Nigeria: Shinkafi's Defection - ANPP Summons Zamfara Lawmakers

The All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) has summoned all legislators, including Senators, House of Representatives and State Assembly members from Zamfara State over the defection of Governor Aliyu Shinkafi from ANPP to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Governor Shinkafi last December 5, 2008 in Gusau, formally dumped the ANPP for PDP citing what he described as factionalisation in the leadership of the party.

His defection was however generally believed to be directly connected to the irreconcilable difference between him and former governor of the state, Alhaji Ahmad Sani Yerima.

In a notice of meeting signed by ANPP's National Secretary, Senator Saidu Umar Kumo, the meeting scheduled for tomorrow holds at the party's National Secretariat by 3:00PM.

"The All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) invites all legislators from Zamfara State for a crucial meeting at our National Headquarters Abuja. The meeting is as a result of some political developments in the state," the notice stated.

The notice titled 'ANPP National Headquarters meeting with all ANPP legislators from Zamfara State' said, "The invited legislators are; all ANPP Senators from Zamfara State, all ANPP House of Representatives members from Zamfara State and all ANPP members in Zamfara State House of Assembly."

When contacted, Senator Kumo acknowledged the summon but declined comment on the agenda of the meeting and whether there is possibility of getting the State Assembly to initiate impeachment moves against Governor Shinkafi.

President Umaru Yar'adua last week Thursday in Gusau formally presented the PDP flag to Governor Shinkafi with Vice President Goodluck Jonathan, eight serving governors and national leadership of the PDP led by its national chairman, Prince Vincent Ogbulafor in attendance.
