South Africa: Kapini's Fine Form Continues

12 January 2009

In-form Platinum Stars goalkeeper Tapuwa Kapini is confident of maintaining his stranglehold on the team's number one jersey, which has in recent weeks relegated Wayne Sandilands to the background.

The Zimbabwe international was in imperious form between the sticks for the Rustenburg-based outfit at the weekend making a string of top-drawer saves and was duly awarded the Man of the Match accolade after Stars' 2-2 draw against Bloemfontein Celtic.

"I am excited at winning the award. Now is my time and I am not looking back," says the 24-year-old shot-stopper.

Despite Stars throwing away a 2-0 lead against a struggling Celtic, Kapini was a stand-out performer and played one of his best games since joining Stars from Highlanders from his homeland.

Kapini thwarted the likes of Shaun Bartlett, Solomon Mathe and Petrus Mahlatse in amazing fashion as the hosts seemed to be running away with the three point's but there was nothing he could to stop an Alimro Lobo own goal and a late Mark Mayambela equaliser.

It has not been smooth sailing in South African football for Zimbabwe's first choice goalkeeper.

He seemed headed for a dream move to Orlando Pirates but when it fell he through he found himself at the Tycoons.

The minder spent most of his first season in the sidelines as Sandilands maintained a stranglehold on the first team jersey.

His fortunes have, however, changed under Miguel Gamondi.
