Zimbabwe: Women's Volleyball League Formed

Harare — AMBITIOUS Harare-based volleyball franchise Dolphins have come out with a new competition geared to promote the women's game and serve as a warm-up to the Harare Premier Volleyball League.

The Metropolitan Volleyball League is set to roar into life on January 31 with six clubs having already confirmed their participation.

Dolphins, Sharks, Marlins, Roosevelt Spikers, Junior Stars Harare and Reform will make up the inaugural Metropolitan Volleyball League.

MVL co-ordinator Robert Njerere yesterday said the women's league would be concluded on April 26.

"We have come up with a Metropolitan League for teams from the Greater Harare and Chitungwiza areas.

"This league is going to start on January 31 at the Stodart Complex in Mbare, which will be our main venue for the games.

"The idea of this league is to promote and raise the women's game.

"We have the Harare Premier Volleyball League as well as games in Bulawayo but all these competitions are dominated by men's teams.

"I have noticed that most of the time people take an interest in games involving KOBA, Bulldogs or JS Harare while little interest is given to women.

"So we have this new league that is devoid of any counter-attraction from men," said Njerere.

Njerere said they had managed to engage some sponsors for token prizes that are meant to motivate the players.

"It is still humble beginnings, but we have sponsors for these games and we will be giving out monetary prizes and bottles of drinks.

"There will be prizes for the best players each day.

"If our plans remain on course, we will have the best players from each month being rewarded," he said.

Njerere said they were hoping to raise money from donations, especially companies that will be given free advertising space around the volleyball courts.

"We have talked to the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation with a view of flighting previews and reviews of the games," he said.
