9 January 2009

Tunis — The official Tunisian Press Agency TAP, reports that a plant set up in Gafsa, in Southern Tunisia by Yazaki, one of the world's leading cable manufacturers, will be operational by June 2010.

The plant which will manufacture automotive cable components will have a workforce of 2500, including 308 senior technicians. The plant, whose total cost amounts to 24 million Euros (43 million dinars), is the second in Africa by the Japanese firm.

The news was announced on Friday in Tunis, by the group's logistics and new projects manager, Mr Joaquim Bernardo.

He also said that in a first stage a pilot unit will be set up with the aim of training the qualified personnel. Recruitment operations will start on February 15, 2009, at a rate of 40 recruitments per week. The aim, he said is to launch production by early March.

Mr Bernardo explained that the choice of Tunisia, is essentially justified by the degree of competence of its cadres.

He added that the presidential project of linking up the Gafsa governorate to the country's highway network, to reach 1200 km as against 359 currently, will strengthen the region's basic infrastructure.

The plant will also boost land transportation, as well as air transportation in the region, he said.

Yazaki manufactures about 30% of the world's automotive and high voltage cable production. The group has 154 branches worldwide and employs 200,000 people.
