Tanzania: Girl Knocked Down to Death At Mererani

Arusha — Miriam Juma (18) a resident of Mererani mining settlement in Manyara region was on 1st January 2009 knocked down to death by a speeding vehicle, a Land Rover 110 with registration numbers T480 AFG, at Zaire area in the settlement .

According to the Manyara's Regional Police Commander Luther Mbutu, the accident which happened at 8.30 am was caused by the driver's negligence and high speed.

RPC Mbutu explained the vehicle was in a garage for repairs when a mechanic Eliud Raimos (24) took it for the town round drive to celebrate dawn of the brand new year.

Raimos hit the Primary Court flag mast before coming across the girl. The vehicle smashed her down to death.

The regional police commander said Raimos was drunk and had no driving license and would soon appear in court to answer charges.

Meanwhile, Mariam's remains were buried in her village of Ilongero in Singida region on 4th January.
