Lagos — A police statistical data has indicated sharp reduction in the level of organised crime to about 40 per cent in Lagos, in the last quarter of 2008.

The report also showed that the trend has transited into the current year, "as the command is yet to record any incident of violent crime since the beginning of this year, and this is due to the renewed effort of our officers and men," the report stated.

The statistics, however, indicates a sudden rise in unnatural deaths within the same period.

The report attributed this to the prevailing socio-economic situation in the country, adding that such crimes are however difficult to arrest as they are committed in the confined of people's rooms.

The statistics also revealed that there was a sharp increase in the rate of road accidents in the state and that majority of the accidents involved commercial motorcycle (Okada) riders.

"The fact that are usually very reckless on the road might have been responsible for these accidents."

Daily Independent learnt that burglaries activity also went up in the year under review, so also was house break and entry in highbrow residential areas like, Ikoyi, Lekki among others.

The report assured Lagos residents that 2009 would witness a fresh approach in crime fighting and that policemen in the state have been motivated to perform better.

It also solicited the cooperation of the residents in its drive to check crime within the metropolis.
