President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Alhaji Sani Lulu Abdullahi has commended Globacom Limited and the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for the recent decision to host the ceremonies of the Glo-CAF Awards in Lagos.
The NFF is playing host to the 30th CAF General Assembly from February 9-12, 2009 and Lulu says he is excited about the glamour the ceremonies of the Glo-CAF Awards will add to the events of the General Assembly.
"We are happy that Globacom reached an understanding with CAF to bring this event to Nigeria and hold the ceremonies in the evening of the CAF Congress opening ceremony on February 10. This will no doubt add a beautiful experience for the delegates and leave them with a good feeling of Nigeria," Lulu noted.
The NFF President said the Federation was also collaborating with Globacom on other areas to ensure a successful hosting of both the General Assembly and the Awards ceremony. He said the collaboration is pursuant to the mutually beneficial partnership between Globacom and the NFF.
"Globacom has again demonstrated a deep capacity to add value to football administration in Nigeria and the NFF is appreciative of all the contributions of the company to our efforts to raise the game to greater heights. We are very happy with the partnership between Globacom and the NFF which pre-dates the present board of NFF and this administration under my leadership will continue to collaborate with Globacom in building our national teams to be among the best in the world," the NFF President declared.
Globacom officials recently announced a change of venue for the 2008 edition of the awards from Dakar, Senegal and explained that the decision was made to streamline the activities of CAF. Okon Iyanam, Globacom's Executive Director, Marketing Commu-nication had said in a statement that the decision to bring the event to Lagos was made to streamline the event with the programmes of the 30th Annual General Assembly of the continental soccer body. "The 2008 Glo-CAF Awards earlier scheduled for January 23 in Dakar Senegal will now hold on February 10 in Lagos, Nigeria. The changes have been made to enrich the programmes of the 38th CAF Delegates Conference which holds in Nigeria from February 9th-12th," Iyanam had explained.
"Globacom and CAF have enjoyed a very robust and positive partnership for the promotion and development of African football since 2005 and this mutual understanding informed our disposition to a change of venue despite the huge commitment in finance, personnel and time made towards the hosting of the event in Dakar," remarked Iyanam. The frontline nominees for the 2008 Glo-CAF Awards are Adebayor Emmanuel (Togo), Abou Trika Mohamed (Egypt), Amr Zaki (Egypt) Didier Drogba (Cote d'Ivoire) and Essien Emmanuel (Ghana). The top three nominees as voted by Coaches of the National Associations of CAF will be announced next week.
Mali's Frederick Kanoute won the 2007 awards on the heels of Didier Drogba (2006) and Samuel Eto'O Fils (2003-2005).
